Which NXT sets are required to build the JohnNXT?
Would I manage with 1 NXT2.0 set and 1 NXT1.0 set? Will I have the correct parts required to build it? As there is no mention of NXT2.0 in the book description I am guessing that it was written for the NXT1.0.
With regard the firmware on the bricks - would it work if the JH1.28 firware was installed on the bricks?

JohnNXT programs work with enhanced firmware. The robot was designed to be built with many many parts,
so NXT 8527 or 8547 is the same. Here's the BOM:
